Epoxy Coverage Calculator

Find how much area a gallon of epoxy covers at your thickness, and how many gallons a surface needs. Works for table tops in inches and floor coatings in mils.

1. Area
2. Thickness and coats

1/8 in = 0.125 in. Floor coats are often 8–20 mils.

How to use this calculator

  1. Enter the length and width of the surface in feet, or the total square feet.
  2. Enter the thickness of one coat in inches, mils or millimeters.
  3. Enter the number of coats and keep 10% or more for waste.

How the calculation works

  • Volume (cubic inches) = area (sq ft) × 144 × thickness (in) × coats
  • Gallons = volume ÷ 231
  • Coverage per gallon (sq ft) = 231 ÷ thickness (in) ÷ 144

Rough or porous surfaces such as raw wood and concrete soak up more. Seal them first or add extra.

Why epoxy covers less than the label says

  • Porous surfaces: raw wood, concrete and cork soak up the first coat. A thin seal coat stops this and saves epoxy on the flood coat.
  • Edges and drips: epoxy runs over the sides of a table or counter. Add 10–15% if you let it flow over the edges.
  • Uneven surfaces: low spots fill deeper than the average thickness. Measure the depth in a few places and use the deepest.
  • Leftovers: some epoxy always stays in the bucket and on the spreader, so mix a little more than the exact number.

Frequently asked questions

How many square feet does a gallon of epoxy cover?

It depends on thickness. One US gallon (231 cubic inches) covers about 12.8 sq ft at 1/8 inch, 25.7 sq ft at 1/16 inch and 160 sq ft at 10 mils.

How much epoxy do I need for 100 square feet?

At a 1/8 inch flood coat, about 7.8 gallons. A 10 mil floor coat needs about 0.62 gallons per coat. Add 10–15% for waste.

How many ounces of resin per square foot?

About 10 fl oz per square foot at 1/8 inch, and about 5 fl oz at 1/16 inch.

What is a mil?

A mil is one thousandth of an inch (0.001 in). Floor and garage epoxy coatings are usually described in mils, while art and table top epoxy is described in fractions of an inch.
