Table Top & Bar Top Epoxy Calculator

Enter the size of your table top or bar top. The calculator adds up the seal coat, the flood coats and the edges, so you know how many gallons of epoxy to buy before you start.

How to use this calculator

  1. Enter the length and width of the top, or the diameter for a round table. Tap a common size to fill it in.
  2. Enter the thickness of the top so the edges are included. Use 0 if you will not coat the edges.
  3. Keep the seal coat on for bare wood, choose the flood coat thickness, and how many flood coats you plan.
  4. Buy at least the total shown. Most kits are sold by total volume of resin plus hardener.

How the calculation works

  • Seal coat = area × 1/32 in
  • Flood coats = area × flood thickness × number of coats
  • Edges = perimeter × top thickness × 1/32 in

The total is converted to fluid ounces (1 fl oz ≈ 1.805 cubic inches) and gallons (231 cubic inches), then your waste percentage is added for drips, the mixing cup and the spreader.

Epoxy for common table sizes

Seal coat, one 1/8 inch flood coat and edges on a 1.5 inch thick top, including 10% extra:

Dining table, 6 × 3 ft1.98253
Bar top, 8 × 2 ft1.77226

A 4 × 2 ft coffee table needs about 114 fl oz in total.

Tips for a smooth table top

  • Tape the underside of the edges so drips can be peeled off cleanly after curing.
  • Mix the seal coat in a small batch. You only need enough to wet the wood.
  • Pour the flood coat in the middle and spread it toward the edges with a plastic spreader.
  • Pass a heat gun or torch quickly over the surface to pop bubbles. Do not hold it in one place.
  • Work at about 70–80 °F (21–27 °C) and keep dust off while it cures.

Frequently asked questions

How much epoxy do I need for a 4 × 8 table?

About 3.5 gallons of mixed epoxy for a seal coat, one 1/8 inch flood coat and the edges of a 1.5 inch thick top, including 10% extra.

How much epoxy for a bar top?

An 8 ft × 2 ft bar top needs about 1.8 gallons for a seal coat and one 1/8 inch flood coat with edges, including 10% extra.

How many square feet does a gallon of table top epoxy cover?

About 12.8 square feet at 1/8 inch thick, because a US gallon is 231 cubic inches. At 1/16 inch the same gallon covers about twice that area.

What is a seal coat and do I need one?

A seal coat is a thin first layer brushed or spread onto bare wood. It fills pores so air does not bubble up into the flood coat. Use one on any wood that is not already sealed.

How thick can I pour table top epoxy?

Most table top epoxies self-level at about 1/8 inch per coat. For a thicker finish, pour another flood coat once the first has cured to the stage your product recommends.
