Pounds of color flakes for the floorCoverage per gallon at any thicknessWhen can you walk and drive on it?How to use this calculator
- Pick a garage size or measure the floor in feet. For an L-shaped floor, add the parts separately.
- Copy the thickness (mils) and percent solids for each coat from the product data sheet.
- Enter the kit size and price to see how many kits to buy.
How the calculation works
- 1 gallon of 100% solids covers 1,604 sq ft at 1 mil
- Gallons per coat = area × mils ÷ (1,604 × solids %)
- Total = sum of coats × (1 + waste %); kits = total ÷ kit size, rounded up
Gallons per coat for common garages
100% solids epoxy, before waste:
| Garage | Area | 8 mils | 10 mils | 15 mils |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1-car garage (12 × 22 ft) | 264 sq ft | 1.3 gal | 1.6 gal | 2.5 gal |
| 2-car garage (22 × 22 ft) | 484 sq ft | 2.4 gal | 3 gal | 4.5 gal |
| 3-car garage (32 × 22 ft) | 704 sq ft | 3.5 gal | 4.4 gal | 6.6 gal |
Tips for epoxy floors
- Prepare the concrete first: clean, degrease and grind or etch as your product says. Most failures come from poor preparation.
- Check for moisture by taping a plastic sheet to the floor overnight; water under it means the slab needs treatment.
- Mix one kit at a time and roll it out quickly. Epoxy left in the bucket heats up and sets faster.
Frequently asked questions
How much epoxy do I need for a 2-car garage floor?
A 22 × 22 ft two-car garage is about 484 square feet. A 10 mil base coat plus an 8 mil top coat of 100% solids epoxy takes about 5.4 gallons, before waste. Water-based kits need more because part of the liquid evaporates.
How many square feet does a gallon of floor epoxy cover?
At 100% solids, one gallon covers 1,604 square feet at 1 mil, so about 160 sq ft at 10 mils. A coating with 50% solids covers half that at the same dry thickness.
What does "percent solids" mean for floor epoxy?
It is the part of the coating that stays on the floor after it cures. 100% solids epoxy stays almost entirely; water-based epoxy may be 40–60% solids, so you apply more liquid for the same dry film.
How many coats does a garage floor need?
Many systems use a primer or base coat, an optional color flake broadcast, and a clear top coat. Follow your kit: each product lists its own coats and thickness.
